Giddyup, Whoa, Gee-Haw!! How he loved his horses, and with them he moved chicken coops, coal, pianos, furniture and freight. W. A. ”Billy” Hoy was the son of Susanna Wolf Hoy and Joseph Hoy and the founder of Hoy Transfer, Inc. His father, Joseph, was one of the original signatories of the “Articles of Incorporation” for the Borough of State College, PA. In 1888 Billy became the local Dray man after learning he would have to take a “Public Speaking Class” if he were to enroll at Penn State. That was more than this shy, retiring man could deal with and that ended his formal education.

After his death, his daughter, Mary Kathryn Hoy, took over the operation and ran it alone for ten years. In 1947, her son Dick was discharged from the Army and returned home to attend Penn State, but became deeply involved in the business. After purchasing some new trucks, Dick signed an agency agreement with Clipper Van Lines. In 1950, Hoy Transfer contracted with North American Van Lines and as been their representative in the “Centre Region” ever since. In 1957, Hoy Transfer moved from downtown State College to its new location at 1801 North Atherton St., State College, PA. Hoy Transfer is presently located at 2580 Clyde Avenue, State College, PA 16801.
In January, 1996, Hoy Transfer, Inc. was sold to R. Kevin Briscoe, who had been with the company since 1985. Kevin firmly believes in the policies of integrity which Hoy Transfer, Inc. has fostered since 1888.
