LET'S TALK: Get out!

With the arrival of summer weather this week and the holiday weekend, many of us headed outside.

Jack headed off to the shores of Lake Erie for a little R&R at a streamside cabin and some fishing for yellow perch and walleye. Our favorite mascot, Steamer, headed off to a family picnic and we're still not sure who had more fun, Steamer or the kids. We also have someone vying for the title of "favorite uncle" as he described his day at DelGrosso Park with his niece and nephew.

Perhaps it was the warm weather, or maybe the blue moon, but many of us had up-close and personal encounters with critters lately. The fireflies made an early appearance, and Anne reminded us that they really are magical. A black bear followed in the footsteps of a parade of critters at Point View. Not all of Mother Nature's pets stayed outside, as Jess's adventures proved!

There were also some very welcome guests who have now become mom's best friends.

Gee, summer's just gettin' started and we're already on a roll. Family reunions and summer get togethers are great times to explore your own heritage. Sometimes a little dip into the "gene" pool is the most refreshing of all!

What are your plans? Will you be exploring your heritage this summer?

Lazy summer plans

We don't have any travel plans this summer, similar to the last few years.  Since my husband retired we take special joy in traveling during spring and fall . . . times that were unavialable to us when he was teaching!

Summer finds us doing some mighty fine porch sitting with friends.  Our fabulous porch swing was handmade by one of Bill's students.

My other favorite activity is finding a shady nook where I can enjoy a good book.  The lower limbs have not been trimmed from our lovely white bark birch tree and, if I were a kid, I'd be under that tree with my book!

We also regularly visit the local Pennsylvania state parks, Prince Gallitzen (Glendale Lake) and Canoe Creek.  When the family was home recently we climbed Chimney Rock and investigated Canal Basin park, both in Hollidaysburg.  I challenged my daughters to return to Chimney Rock in 25 years and climb it again, remembering me.  Parts of the trail were difficult, but I made it!  Anne H.
