I love Tyrone, Pennsylvania. It is such a nice small community and they have some great stories. There is a small park in Tyrone that is just the neatest place to visit. My son, my wife and I got out there on Saturday May 19, 2007 to visit the park and check out the Train Station that now houses the Tyrone History Museum.

As many of you know I have been writing a lot of stories about trains and some of the parks in Altoona. Unlike some of the parks that I have seen in Altoona, Tyrone has taken a lot of pride in their parks. The Train Park is great. The grass is cut the facilities are well maintained and there is no garbage on the grounds.

The park has three shaded picnic tables that overlook the train station and two caboose; aPRR caboose and a Conrail caboose. The shade trees make for a cool and quiet place to wait and watch trains. There is also a great memorial dedicated to the people from Tyrone who worked on the Railroad. A lovely cazebo sits next to the memorial and is another nice place to watch trains.

The best part of the park is the old train station that is now the History museum. Opened in November of 2002 the Tyrone History Museum contains a selection of Tyrone-related artifacts, photographs, and displays. The museum features a time line spanning the 150-plus years of Tyrone’s existence along with exhibits that change from time to time. It is amazing what volunteers and community support can do to preserve the history of a place.

The train station is in delightful shape. My only complaint is the hours of operation Sunday and Wednesday 1-4pm. We missed the museum by one day. The museum is staffed by volunteers so therefore the need for the limited hours.  So if you are planning on a trip, plan accordingly. Just up from the station is another picnic area along the tracks. A great place to view trains while eating an East End pizza or hoagie and that is what this family was eating.

The rest of our day was spent visiting another park in Tyrone called Reservoir Park. Another great park in good shape, it has a good network of trails to walk, a reservoir for fishing, a playground and numerous picnic areas. The picnic tables are unpainted so bring a table cloth but during the summer come to the park on Sunday evenings for their Concert in the Park series.
