OFF TO BE A FIDDLIN MAN

This is one of the photos I saw on the wall at the pub the other day, and I stared at it for quite sometime.

It really caught my attention because I recently heard a story that my great grandfather Shaner used to play a fiddle for a hoe-down band on Saturdays.  He died in 1924, so these dances he would play would have been in the late 1800's and the early 1900's.  The interesting point here is that I've been calling square dances for nearly 25 years, and I've always wondered why and where it came from.
