ROOT BEER RAG
I recently attended a Billy Joel concert, again. Ok, I have probably seen him 20something times. Me and a gaggle of friends saw him perform in Cleveland at the Quicken Loans Center, which is adjacent to the Cleveland Indians stadium ( where Billy threw out the first pitch that night and then came to the concert ). Most everyone in our gang had never seen him before and were really impressed that a guy that old could still rock and roll.
The highlight of the evening, for me, was about halfway through the concert, Billy played a song of his that I have never heard him play in concert before. One of my all time BJ favs, ROOT BEER RAG. Ironically, that used to be the name of his fan club mailing list, Rootbeer Rags. It's all instrumental, and it's ragtime. Billy's music is quite varied, but I discovered someone taped that very song at that very concert and posted it on youtube and I wanted to share it with all of you.
Now, when you watch this clip, Billy looks old, but it's the lighting and check out how guitarist Tommy Byrnes is trying to keep up with him. It's awesome. I saw Billy at PSU back in '95 at one of his special EVENINGS OF QUESTIONS, ANSWERS AND A LITTLE MUSIC where he plays for a small group of a few thousand at colleges to teach students about the music business. It's great. It's just Billy, a keyboard and the baby grand piano. He briefly played with the Root Beer Rag almost as a prelude to another song, and I remembered I almost fainted, because I love that song so much and thought he would do the whole thing.
Funny thing about the Root Beer Rag, years ago when I was in the church choir, our pianist would always dabble at the Root Beer Rag as my entrance song at our practices. Several other buddies have recorded their version of the rag and taped it for me as a gift. Enjoy!

talent
he really is a talented musician. i'm not a huge fan, i'm a groupie and like the popular stuff, but this really shows the array of musical genius he possesses. my main man springsteen is the same way...as is brian wilson of beach boys fame, true musical innovators and talents.
Love the Rag
Good song. I enjoyed watching him play the song.
On another note I was struck by a brief description of the stadium. In your story you talk about the name of the arena or stadium as the Quicken Loans Stadium. Man what a horrible name. I miss the days when stadium names told you a little bit about the place they were located. For example Three Rivers Stadium. There was a great name and great description of place. I understand the need to drive sponsor dollars but wouldn't be great if we called the The Heinz Three Rivers Stadium.
Clay hardens by immobility – men's minds by standing pat. Both lose the power to take new impressions. (Pinchot 1910: 138)
But now there are two
There are TWO parks now in Pittsburgh -- Heinz Field and PNC Park. It makes sense to me to have baseball parks and football stadiums; I never thought the multi-purpose parks were all that great, from either a fan or a player perspective. You are right, though -- Quicken Loans Park?! How goofy is THAT!?
But, you know, baseball fields actually have a long history of sponsor-names, for example, Wrigley Field (for the gum company). Can you imagine the Cubs playing anywhere else?
And, speaking of Billy Joel -- I last saw him in the 1970s in the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh (before it was Mellon Arena or whatever else it is now). While in college at Indiana University of PA, he actually played on campus, too, but I missed that show (then it was "Billy who?" He's still on my MP3 player!
You know, that reminds me -- I also went to a big concert in the summer of 1975 at Three Rivers Stadium. My professor's son had won a pair of tickets on some radio giveaway, so she sprang for tickets for me and a friend and gave us their Chevy station wagon so we could take him to the concert. Bachman Turner Overdrive, Styx, Edgar Winter and about three or four others I can't remember. It was an all-day blast, but the stadium wasn't such a great place for a concert, either. But then, it really wasn't about the quality of the music -- that concert was all about the volume! We did have a great time.
