Critter Highway

April 19, 2007 – In the woods with the critters

I managed to make the 5:00 a.m. wakeup call. Got settled in the woods by 5:50 a.m.  I was scouting Tussey Mountain for turkeys and it was a productive morning.  The real treat this day was my unexpected visitors.

The turkeys got quiet by 7:00 a.m. so the morning scout was ended, but not before I had several critters stroll by.   When you sit in the Pennsylvania woods, camouflaged and still, nature is just an arm’s length away!

Took this photo on the way out of the woods – got home and emailed Paula and she helped me do the ID. By the way, Paula says anyone interested in such things is a Mycologist!

Turkeys Aplenty!!

Last weekend I was awakened by my lab pup Abby.  She was jumping and bouncing all over me.  As the fog cleared I realized what all the excitement was about.  I looked out my bedroom window and there just twenty feet away were six turkeys. Two big Toms were just a struttin' and a gobblin'.  I was so glad she woke me up!!!  Maybe she will turn out to be a turkey hunter instead of a grouse hunter!!!

Great spot to hunt!

If you decide to hunt out that window make sure you wear ear protection.  And don't forget to open the window before you shoot.   Too bad dogs are not legal for hunting turkey.  That one has a bright future.

5 AM..... to watch turkeys?

Got to admit-  when I read the part about getting up at 5 AM..........  to watch turkeys????????   Had a little trouble getting beyond that!!!  :)   Then you had to prove its worth by getting video of a porcupine!  I have never seen one- at least that I can remember!  Thanks for sacrificing your sleep!!!!!   Course all the phat and phlat comments were almost as fun!!!!

Early Start!

Given your workload and schedule, sleep should never be wasted on turkeys and I can understand that.  At some point - many, many, years from now - you will have more time than tasks and you will get up earlier and earlier.  I get up early each day and I have for years.  The turkeys are an excuse to be in the woods.  Come to think of it, I have countless excuses to be in the woods!

Porcupine Olympics?!

I give the porcupine an 8.0 for his work on the balance beam -- he really "stuck" the landing!

Good one!

From the sounds of things you have healed nicely and are back to your old self!  That's great!

Great Video

I guess I should get up early to head out to the woods and see some of these critters. Raccoons I have seen a lot of but you just don't see a lot of Porcupines. It was fun to watch. Thanks for sharing. How about Turkeys you been seeing much? I just saw a big Jake two days ago.

I also click on the picture. Interesting link. I never knew people painted on mushrooms. What an interesting connection to the Civil War. Really cool. You should have the person who makes those mushroom paintings check out storytrax. Show her the link to your story.

Suggestion

Good idea Erin.

As far as the number of turkeys, it has been years since I have seen [heard] more turkeys.  They are everywhere!

turkeys here too

Here in Columbus we are surrounded by 1 million other people.  As we drive away from the city, we too have been seeing turkeys.    That's how we know we are in the country.  Central Ohio is a major fly way for Canadian geese and many have decided to live here year round.  So inside the beltway we get goosed.

North Carolina as well

Last week when I was in North Carolina - Adam and I were driving to a wedding and a turkey flew out from a bush by the road and we almost hit him!

Jeez.

Thanks for sharing - I

Thanks for sharing - I thought the video was phat!

Meg

Phat

Thank you for reading, viewing and commenting.

I think I know what you mean by - phat, but you may want to explain to the other readers.

Phat

Definition of the term phat:

(Slang) great; wonderful; terrific.

Phlat?

I saw a porcupine on the highway this morning on my way into Altoona, PA -- I guess you could say he was PHLAT!

Phlat

Haha!

That sucks for him though.

You got THAT right!

Yeah -- I guess you could say he was in a pretty prickly situation . . .

Early riser

It's a good thing you took pictures or Meg would never know what happens early in the morning.  She prefers to be just coming home at midnight and sleeping through your favorite part of the day.  She's more familiar with  what or who's on the street in her college town of  Washington, DC.

10 p.m. is the middle of the night!

As she gets older her body clock will adjust.  Those mid-night critters can be dangerous.  I'll take my chances with "porky!"

...

At least I don't have to get up early to see the squirrels or mice around here! :-P

They're everywhere...

Cheap pets

The wild critters that choose to come and visit my house have incredibly good taste, just like my many two-legged visitors. And they are very low maintenance pets -- I don't even have to feed them!
