Spring Peepers!

Traveling home from work this afternoon, we heard our first Spring Peepers!  I've always wondered what "peepers" really are.  Some kind of tadpoles?  How do they make such magnificent music?  It's a sure sign that winter has departed.  Please share if you know what peepers are, and how they got that name.

Tell tale signs of Spring

I love the tell tale signs of Spring. The spring peepers is just one of those beautiful sounds. I just wanted to let you know I submitted a story about Spring Peepers. Take a look if you like.

Clay hardens by immobility – men's minds by standing pat. Both lose the power to take new impressions. (Pinchot 1910: 138)

I dunno

I'm not sure about those, but last night I slept with my windows open, and was woken by a whole 'mess' of birds singing at an ungodly hour.  Do they not understand that darkness should indicate quiet?  How can the early bird catch the worm when they are all shrieking? (hahaha...i know it's beautiful)
