jakes and more jakes
March 22, 2007 - 8:17pm — turkeyboy8888
Season started here March 15. A very early spring and the birds were well underway. Gobblers had busted up and had hens. Jakes seem to be everywhere...next years two year old harvest will be good! The 20 gauge BPS has barked twice...once at 40 yards which I had not planned, but, the bird was stone dead with the Winchester Elites. Had a nice close encounter with a bird I,m sure is a 3 year old yesterday morning. He was slowly working my way at about 60 yards and a SINGLE sassy hen took him away! Hope your scouting is going well!

Spring-a-ding!
Nice to hear you are under attack by all those jakes. Is there a fall turkey season in your state? I am in Tennessee right now and the weather is summer like. Mid-80's. Just visiting - no firearms permitted. On the trip down, I saw birds in PA fields, but no sightings along 81 heading south. I did see another dead coyote along Route 40 - Exit #4 - in Tennessee. Saw one last trip too!
I plan to get serious about patterning a few "close to home" birds later this week. The birds here are still flocked up and gathering in fields to "dance and fight."
I need to work up the courage to pattern my 3-1/2" 12 gauge Mossberg. I hate firing that canon at a tarket. My shoulder just can't take the kick! Never feel that kick when I have a turikey in my scope.
Keep us posted.
ok....
well now this makes sense, as to why my mother had a turkey hen in her yard last weekend...and she while her home is secluded, it is still within the city limits!! She got pictures of it too, I'll get them from her and try to post them. It even made the news that a turkey was crossing boulevards....must be better to dodge Fords than Winchesters, hahha!!!
Happy hunting, and eating!
A turkey in love - fears nothing!
I once saw a young turkey strutting on the median strip in the middle of an interstate highway south of Pittsburgh. As we drove past and hit the horn, the lovesick tom would gobble at the traffic. I didn't see any hens, and he had the place all to himself.
