Anytime we travel to or from the Black Hills, I am always amazed at how quickly you move from the relatively flat plain to the Hills and then out again back onto the plain.  On this leg of our journey we travel west on I-90 and leave the Black Hills in Sundance, Wyo.  Harry Longabaugh received his nickname from this town and went on to infamy with his partner Butch.  The 1969 movie depicts their supposed death in Bolivia but is that really what happened?  Check out this site.  The museum in the basement of the courthouse is worth a stop for an hour or so.  The story of the Lakota Sun Dance for which this town is named, is the older and better story.
We travel on to Devils Tower National Monument, a volcanic feature dominating the surrounding eroded plain and serving as sentinel of the Belle Fourche River valley.  President Teddy Roosevelt designated this our country's first national monument under the newly created American Antiquities Act of 1906.  This is a sacred place for many of the plains tribes and their stories are too numerous to list but this link can give you a good start on discovering their tales.  My favorite story is the climb of Devils Tower fueled by Clark Candy Bars.
From here we move on to my favorite cowboy town; Sheridan, Wyo.  Judy and I love this town and especially enjoy the shops on the main thorofare.  If the rodeo is on you better bring your own bed as accomodations are occupied but it is an exciting time nonetheless.
