SNOW DAY STORIES!

OK so as a teacher I'm on Snow Day #2 in a row, almost UNHEARD of, but since the general area (aka the NORTHEAST) has been dumped on, lots of us are shut down and in due to the weather (Punxy Phil's revenge?)

We've all got great snow day stories I am sure....days when the powers-that-were thoughtit was too cold and ugly to be in school and yet we flew out the doors to sled, build snow'people', or 'buck' cars.

Let's hear some of those 'good ol' days, walking uphill both ways' kinda stories!!  Post away, I am waiting!  (and in the meantime, here are some pictures of my kids out in it yesterday!  Eve made a snow angel she was VERY proud of ---and yes it DID take us longer to get prepped to go out than we were outside!!)

Snow Duds

With five young children, getting ready to go anywhere was interesting.  But in winter, it was something else again!  The oldest was barely seven when the youngest was born, so it was a true circus!  One memory is of starting with the oldest and dressing each one for some outdoor fun.  We began with snow pants, then boots, coat, hat, scarf, mittens . . . snow pants, boots, coat, hat, scarf, mittens . . . snow pants, boots, coat, hat, scarf, mittens . . . snow pants, boots, coat, hat, scarf, mittens . . . Finally!  I'm down to the baby, lying patiently on the couch.  I begin to put her legs into the snowsuit, and here comes her oldest sibling, coatless, snow pantless, bootless, mittenless, hatless!  "Becki!" I sputter, "Where are your outdoor clothes?"  And her classic reply was "I was too hot, so I took them off!"  That must have been the day I learned to begin with the baby!  Anne H.

only funny in hindsight....

and only b/c i am LIVING that now, hahaha!!!

and we spent a good 30minutes getting dressed...and then only 15 or so outside (it was more bitter than i expected)!! ugh!!!!!

Ice Skating In the Front Yard

I was living in Duncansville, PA and it was an odd year because it was extremely cold and snowy but it was starting to warm up. The nights before the weathermen were predicting a mixture of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Now where we lived at the time we often got more snow than ice. So my brother, my sister and I were dreaming about a day off from school so we could ride sleds, and build snow forts. When the clock in my bedroom read 6:00am I jumped from bed and ran to the radio. Sure enough all Hollidaysburg schools were canceled. We had a SNOW DAY! We ran outside to play BUT there was a problem.

There was no freshly fallen snow. Nothing, nada, zip. Instead, there was ice on the trees, ice on the sidewalk and ice on the snow in the yard. We of course knew what this meant. There would be no sledding. Plastic sleds on ice were fun, until you had to stop. No, there would be no building forts or throwing snowballs. How could you? The ice laid thick on the snow. Instead, we head back indoors all except my brother. Who, being the brave sort, ventured out into the yard to test the snow and quickly found out we had a huge ice skating rink. So instead of sledding, and throwing snow balls, we spent the day playing our own version of hockey. It was a lot of fun.

That is my short little Snow Day story.

facial expressions

NIck is probably wondering...
