Tioga County, PA was formed on March 26, 1804 from Lycoming County. Named for the Tioga River, the name is derived from an Indian word meaning "the forks of a stream." Wellsboro, the county seat, was laid out in 1806 and incorporated 1830. The original courthouse is still used, making it the oldest courthouse in the state. The county is located along U. S. Route 6 and is home to the Pine Creek Gorge, also known as Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon.
