Pottsville, PASchuylkill County, PA was formed on March 1, 1811 out of Northampton and Berks counties. Parts of Columbia and Luzerne counties were added in 1818. The Schuylkill River crosses the county and lent its name to it. The county seat, Pottsville, was made a borough in 1828 and a city in 1911. Anthracite mining and other coal related industries have been important to the local economy since the 19th century.
