Erie, PAErie County, PA was formed on March 12, 1800 from Allegheny County. Named for Lake Erie, which took its own name from the Erie Indians. Erie, the county seat, was laid out in 1795 and made a city in 1851. During the War of 1812, ships for Perry's fleet were built here. In 1813, Perry's fleet won Battle of Lake Erie.
