Lock Haven, PAClinton County, PA was formed on June 21, 1839 out of Lycoming and Centre counties. Most historians agree that the county was named for New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. In 1776, colonists eager for independence created the "Tiadaghton Declaration of Independence," a document committing their efforts to the cause for American independence. By the 19th century, the dense forests of Penn's Woods along the upper branches of the Susquehanna River provided an economic boom. Lock Haven, the county seat, became a city in 1870.
