Civil War battle: Adams County, Pennsylvania

Adams County, PA was formed on January 22, 1800 out of York County.  Named for President John Adams, the county is an important agricultural center, especially fruit growing (apples, peaches). The county seat, Gettysburg, was incorporated 1806, and was the site of an important Civil War battle in 1863.  A few months after the battle, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "Gettysburg Address" there at the dedication of the national cemetery.
