Bedford County, PA was created on March 9, 1771 from Cumberland County. It was a very large county, embracing much of central Pennsylvania. The county was a key location in the development of the colonial frontier. It was the site of Fort Bedford, erected during the French and Indian War in 1758. Surrounded by agricultural land, the county has always been an important overland transportation hub. It was crossed by several Indian paths, Forbes Road, the Lincoln Highway, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
