Iced Sugar Cookies

Last weekend, we experimented with some new cookie technology -- marking pens with food coloring.  We needed a cookie that had a smooth surface.  My sister remembered a sugar cookie recipe she had.  She also had a recipe for a glaze that hardened nicely, was smooth and shiny (great for the markers!), and durable (hard but not tooth-shattering).  The glaze also drizzled well for decorating.  (See recipes below.)

Sugar Cookies

Sift together:  2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt

Cream together:  2/3 cup shortening, 1 cup sugar

Mix flour mixture and shortening mixture together.

Add: 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 TBSP milk

Freeze dough 1/2 to 1 hour.

Roll out on floured surface and cut into shapes.  Place on ungreased cookie sheets.  Bake at 400 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes.  Makes about 3 dozen, depending on size of cookie cutters.

Shiny Sugar Cookie Glaze

Combine 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 TBSP light corn syrup, 2 TBSP water, 10 drops food coloring.  Makes about 1/2 cup.  (Keep stirring while using.)
