Late October Squirrel Hunt 2007

It was a cold late October saturday afternoon, with the sky threatening to rain and the temp somewhere in the high-thirties. This would be Joe's first time going along for a hunt, and he couldn't hunt because he didn't have his safety course done yet, so he came along to our property in Butler Co. just to see if he was interested in it. He borrowed some of my gear from when I was smaller, and put it on and we went to our property in Butler. We arrived around 2:30, got out, loaded my gun and was ready to go.

Joe looking excited and ready to go. (I think he just didn't like the hat)

As we walked into the woods, we saw signs of deer all over the ground. There was also coyote tracks, or a loose dog but they were all over the place, and I doubt one dog could do all of that.

We found a deer trail, and there is a lot of thick woods in some parts so we stayed to the trail and I had Joe lead to get used to try to spot squirrels and learn how to tell when something is coming and to quickly identify it. After about an hour, reaching the end of the woods and an open field, we decided to cut off the trail and go back through the thick timber. We hadn't seen or heard any squirrels, and I was starting to really hope I would get a squirrel. I really didn't care if I got one, but when you are trying to get someone to take up the sport, you want them to see the best of it and get them excited for it. It's like taking a little kid fishing. Once they catch a fish, they are hooked (haha) for life. So we were walking back, and to our left there was brown and it was 2 does who ran off after looking at us for about 10 seconds.
Walking, and almost back to my cousin's house, about 20 yards away I spotted something moving swiftly off of the ground and up a tree. Before Joe knew it, the squirrel was down after the shot startled him. He hadn't even spotted the gray squirrel and it was down before he knew it was there. So there I got a squirrel and I think I've got something even better, a new hunting buddy.
