Let's go to the drive-in

Thinking about the movies lately, I recall my younger years, spent in Butler, Pennsylvania.  While I was forbidden to go to drive-in movies with a boyfriend, going with a group of girls was acceptable.

Drive-ins were a big draw in the 60s, sometimes with double features.  At that time, the speakers were attached to a pole, beside  which you parked - the whole affair was sort of a large open field with parking spots desgnated by the posts.  There was always a swingset down in the front for restless kids, and usually a picnic table too.  The concession stand and restrooms were in the same building with the projection equipment, a little farther back than mid-field, and the "screen" was a sort of humongous white billboard.

What made my experience rather unique - or so I came to find out as I moved around the state - were the "necker checkers" at the local drive-ins.  These were men dressed in long white lab coats who roamed about the parking field with flashlights, making sure that everyone behaved himself and that no one was likely to be caught "en flagrante"!  We laughingly dubbed them the "necker checkers," but I have no idea what their official job title was!

Can you imagine such a thing today?

It seems that drive-ins may be making a comeback.  I doubt our $1/carload specials will ever return . . .

maybe not...

maybe not $1 carload, but we thought we got a great deal earlier this summer when our family of 4 saw WallE (a brand new release) for $12.  we could have stayed for the 2nd movie (another new release) for that price as well, but alas it was not appropriate for the under 5 set.

we love the drive ins around here.  We take blankets, chairs, food, wipes & paper towels, and have a grand time.  the bummer this summer is there are/were too few kids' movies.

I'm glad I get to do with my kids what my parents did w/ us....

I miss the drive-ins

I miss the drive ins. What great time. My first drive-in movie was Jaws. Seeing a large shark scared me to no end but now I enjoy diving with them. No permenant damage done. I loved the evenings with the windows rolled down in the car. laying in the back of the station wagon and eating whatever snacks Mom and Dad brought along.

Thank you for the memories.
