National Story League -- Proposal for Change
The National Story League is considering some changes. Storytelling continues to be an important art form, and the NSL has been doing it for more than a century.
Here are the results of a recent survey of the members (from Pat Gill):
These proposals and recommendations were formulated to reorganize and simplify the NSL so it can better serve the members with encouragement, recognition and prudent allocation of finances.
Members want a name change. Of the 57 responses from 11 leagues (out of 17) and 1 life member, 32 voted that the name National Storytellers League best describes what we do and who we are -- we tell stories. National Storytelling League, with the emphasis on stories was selected by 18. It was pointed out that storytelling causes confusion with the National Storytelling Network, a professional organization. Three chose to keep our current name. Four new names were suggested: National League of Storytellers, the Art of International Storytelling League (or Community), the USA Storytellers League, and the American Storytellers League.
The proposals regarding reorganization were overwhelmingly supported:
- reorganize into TWO districts administered by the National Board
- clarify responsibilities of the national organization
- improve communication using available technology
- change the name of the organization
- PaulaZ's Stories
