A PLACE OR A REASON?
May 10, 2008 - 8:40am — Corys_Stories
My favorite months out of the year are March, May and October. Some may guess and say, “Oh, what fun, because of Spring Training, Memorial Day and Halloween.” And, I would laugh and say, “Ha! No, because of St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo and Oktoberfest.” Come on, now, being German and Irish, and having had taken 4 years of Spanish in high school gives me the right to call these holidays MY personal favorites. Yes, other country’s national holidays gives us Americans just another reason to party along with them. It’s nice to have a reason to celebrate, but with my ethnic background, I just need a place. ( with a cot nearby )
So, Slainte! Salud! Prosit!...and cheers!
Do you have a favorite month or holiday(s)? Tell me about it.

Hmm...
Now that I have kids, I'm always trying to find ways to spruce things up around here and make it fun. So really, every month we're celebrating something!! Even June is School's Out and Vacation time! It's not all a big party here, but we try to jazz it up all the time. I'm not too big on Cinco de Mayo, it's pretty new to me and I understand the people there don't celebrate it as much as we do. So perhaps it's Americans who turn everything into an 'event'!!
Party Hearty Marty!
Being in activities for as long as I have been, theming months is fun. I've always enjoyed different ethnic themes so dining services could also help out. here is a list of some themes I've done
JANUARY - Chinese New Year, Super Bowl Party ( though lately they've been in early Feb. )
FEBRUARY- Italian, Valentines Day, and Prez Day and Mardi Gras
MARCH-St Pat's Day and spring, baseball theme fun
APRIL- Easter, Earth Day and Arbor Day
MAY- May Pole on May Day, cinco de mayo, and Memorial day
JUNE- Flag day and father's day and first of summer ( car shows )
JULY- indepedence day and christmas in july is always popular and confuses people
AUGUST- BACK TO SCHOOL SOCK HOP 50's dance or Hawaiian Night
SEPT.- first of autumn, or shindig in the barn, Jewish holidays
OCTOBER- Halloween and World Series Party
NOVEMBER- vets day and thanksgiving and Black Friday
DECEMBER- St. Nick's Day, Pearl harbor remembrance day, christmas and first of winter...try to incorporate summer like we did with Christmas in July, try a Carribean Christmas
Viva la Mexico
These ethnic celebrations are wonderful opportunities to celebrate the diverse and unique cultures of America. Cinco de Mayo is a great story. A real David and Goliath. On May 5 1862, the French, who had the better equipment and double the manpower, were defeated by the Mexicans and Indians in a town called Puebla. It was a major victory. Cinco de Mayo is not the day of Mexico's Independence rather it celebrates a great victory (and story).
Many bars (and Mex-American restaurants) celebrate Cinco de Mayo with banner displays that are merely beer advertisements. Cinco de Mayo, and other ethnic holidays, are times when people celebrate their unique cultures. They are times when people remember their own family history. So on these days we may all be a little Spanish, Irish, or German but not necessarily alcholics.
Thank you Corys_Stories for remembering Cinco de Mayo. I hope you had a good celebration.
