Hope

Knowing it is still cold and sometimes dreary in the north country, I thought you might take heart in the signs of spring appearing down here on the Alabama Gulf Shore.  The osprey are beginning their nesting rituals, the azalea, magnolia and lily pads are blossoming and the bees are out pollinating.  Today a south wind is blowing up from the Gulf and bringing fog, humidity and fresh sea breezes to the campground.  The past two weeks have been witness to a rapid lowering of the average age of the population, brought on by college spring break and the usual migratory rituals.  Beaches that have been virtually deserted all winter, are now the scene of energetic children splashing in the waves while moms smile somewhat nervously and admonish the kids with, "don't go out too far'.  The children listen with half an ear but do edge closer to shore.  Shopkeepers give double coupons to those purchasing "local" supplies, which we take to mean does not include flip-flops, swim suits and "vacation" food.

I do not write this to generate envy, rather to point out there is comfort in the observation of annual cycles and the knowledge that within a matter of a few short weeks, geographically specific signs of spring will arrive in the north.  Take hope, the tough winter is almost through and the frozen ground will thaw, breaking up the soil and allowing the flowers of spring and new birth to poke through.

Our grandchildren have been telling us of the fun of playing in the deep snow drifts and we rejoice that they find joy in these simple pleasures.  As the effect of the gulf breezes begins to penetrate the cold up there, venture out with friends and family and rejoice in the miracle of new life God returns to us each year.  Take hope, it won't be long.

Hope Springs Eternal, even up here!

The first color of spring greeted me this fine sunny St. Pat's Day, so even at latitude 40 degrees 29 minutes North we are hopeful! (And, since the season hasn't started yet, the Pittsburgh Pirates are still in contention!)

Spring Pirates

And today the Pirates go for a second win over the Blue Jays.  Hope springs eternal.

Pirates

At least the pirates beat the Yankees.

Wish I were in Bradington.

How sweet it is

You're right -- it's ALWAYS good to beat the Yankees, even if it is only the Grapefruit League!

not too far...

you're not far from where my grandmother grew up, and I've been there in spring once, and it is beautiful.  My mother for years has tried to grow a magnolia to replicate that, and finally has one conquering Pennsylvania (and triumphing!)

love the analogy of the mirgatory population with spring breakers....good one.

Thanks for giving us hope...we have a few signs here on C. Ave as well....I had a robin blocking my way into the driveway friday, and the crocuses are up, and our Christmas lights are DOWN!!  It MUST be spring!!!

Alabama Roots

This is a beautiful state and we are enjoying the area.  We really like the town of Fairhope.  What a beautiful town and a great name.
