Happy Digging!

It's October, so it's time for Archeology Month here in Pennsylvania! There are many great activities going on throughout the Commonwealth. Check out the official Pennsylvania Archaeology Month website for details.

PA Archeology Month Poster 2007This year's poster is a dandy! "Archaeology is . . ." shows how archaeology draws on and contributes to many other subject areas, including the sciences, the social sciences, art, math and all the language arts (reading, writing, speaking). To get your own copy, go to the PA Archaeology Month website. There are also bookmarks, pencils and an assortment of brochures and booklets about the work archaeologists have done in Pennsylvania that has helped us all to learn the story of those who came here before us.

If you're a teacher, there is also an essay contest for Pennsylvania students in grades 4 through 6 (Group 1) and 7 through 9 (Group 2). The theme of the contest is "What are archaeological sites and why is it important to preserve them?" I've been a judge for this contest in the past, and I'm always impressed by the depth of understanding and new insights that students bring to this discussion. You've got some time to think about this -- entries are due February 1, 2008. For details, go to the PA Archaeology Month website.

If you're looking for a speaker for your group, organization, or class, there are archaeologists who will come and speak to your group for FREE. My colleagues and I offer a great variety of topics suitable for audiences of all ages. A list of speakers and topics is also available at the PA Archaeology Month website.

HAPPY

ARCHAEOLOGY

MONTH!

Celebrations of the wonders of archaeology are not limited to Pennsylvania. The time of the year may vary, but from shipwrecks to atomic bombs, mastodons to buffalos, flint knappers to pot makers, there are lots of fun ways to explore underground history. Check these out.
